Ring a bell to bring in the Olympics

A TURNER prize-winning artist and musician is inviting everyone in the UK to ring a bell to celebrate the first day of the London 2012 Olympics.

Martin Creed came up with the unique idea for bells to be rung as quickly and as loudly as possible for three minutes this Friday (July 27) at 8.12am.

Martin’s Work No. 1197: All The Bells, is a London 2012 Festival commission.

Thousands of people have already registered to take part, from The Royal Navy to the The Girl Guides Association.

Anyone can join in by ringing any kind of bell - from enthusiastic children with hand bells, bicycle bells and doorbells to experienced change ringing experts of tower bells.

Martin, a former Lenzie Academy pupil, said: “It’s by people and for people. On the morning of the opening of the Games it’s a massive signal that something is happening.”

Martin’s parents Gisela and John, who live in Lenzie, will be supporting the event. Gisela said: “We are going to ring bells at home and notify the neighbours and John will cycle round the neighbourhood ringing a bell.”
