Rush-hour chaos at Bishopbriggs Cross could be sorted...
Bishopbriggs Cross
RED-light blues at a busy junction could soon be a thing of the past if a high-tech new system is introduced.
Fed-up motorists regularly complain about queues of traffic forming on Kirkintilloch Road, in Bishopbriggs, because of the phasing of traffic lights at Bishopbriggs Cross.
One taxi driver told the Herald: “Every few weeks they seem to go out of phase and it can take up to 20 minutes to get through.
“We’re always being told Bishopbriggs has one of the worst levels of air pollution in Scotland and it can’t help having these traffic jams.
“The council really need to do something about it.”
David Devine, the council’s head of road and neighbourhood services, insisted that a recent inspection had shown the lights were working properly, but admitted the junction had been flagged-up as a problem.
He added: “It is an extremely busy road and traffic can build up at times.
“Subject to funding being made available, the roads service is assessing whether the junction is suitable for a system known as SCOOT (Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique) which is a new technology that can actively monitor traffic and optimise signals in real-time.”
