Salmond backs Bishopbriggs hero campaign

AMBITIOUS plans to have a statue of "the Founding Father of Scottish Democracy" sited outside the Scottish Parliament has gained the support of the First Minister of Scotland.

The Friends of Thomas Muir, a steering group set up last year to promote the memory of the 18th century political reformer who lived at Huntershill in Bishopbriggs, recently submitted a petition with more than 500 signatures to the Scottish Parliament petitions committee.

In a recent letter, First Minister Alex Salmond said he believes the idea has "much merit" and confirmed he will write to the Parliament's presiding officer to confirm his Govern-ment's support.

Friends of Thomas Muir spokesperson Jimmy Watson said: "I'm absolutely delighted, it's fantastic the First Minister has given this his backing.

"What's wonderful is that the Thomas Muir campaign has attracted cross-party political support."

Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat candidate for East Dunbartonshire, said: "I am delighted that the Scottish Government is backing this campaign, it's an excellent cause and I hope it'll be successful.''
