Save the town hall – that’s the overwhelming message from readers

A WAVE of support has swept the Herald office for crumbling Kirkintilloch Town Hall.
We recently published a questionnaire asking for views and almost 87 per cent of responses have been in favour of saving the town centre building.
And all but a few support Kirkintilloch Town Hall Preservation Trust’s bid to restore the building to its former glory at the heart of the community.
Many also feel that a refurbished hall could be used as an arts and culture centre.
However, not all of the people who responded to the questionnaire backed saving the town hall, but most agree that a town the size of Kirkintilloch needs a recognised public venue that could be used for meetings, concerts and other events.
The town hall was closed in 2004 by East Dunbartonshire Council.
Since then the community-led Kirkintilloch Town Hall Preservation Trust has worked tirelessly to try and save the building.
Trust members will now look over the questionnaire responses before deciding their next move.
Trust member David Whitton said: “I’m very pleased at the response to the questionnaire. It gives a clear indication that people believe the hall should be kept and a way found to regenerate it. This gives us a real boost and shows we are not knocking our heads against a brick wall.”
Members of Kirkintilloch Town Hall Preservation Trust and East Dunbartonshire Council’s head of development and enterprise, Thomas Glen, visited Maryhill Burgh Halls recently to see how they have been redeveloped.
The fact-finding visit has given trust members a lot of positive ideas on how to restore Kirkintilloch Town Hall. Following a study on the town hall last year, East Dunbartonshire council said extensive dry rot and general fabric deterioration were the main problems.
A second condition report has now been carried out and, while the findings have yet to be published, the condition of the building is giving cause for concern.
