VACANT buildings in a former mining village should be razed to the ground and new homes created, insists a concerned councillor.

John Jamieson, elected member for Kirkintilloch East and Twechar, has called for concrete plans to:

* Demolish 16 fully-vacant, four-in-a-block housing buildings in the ‘Coal Board’ scheme in Twechar.

* Rehouse the remaining 22 tenants to allow the demolition of 11 partially-occupied blocks in the same scheme.nStart early work on new homes which might be required to rehouse tenants.

Councillor Jamieson raised a motion demanding action at the recent housing and community services committee.

The move has sparked an assurance that the issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the committee on October 11.

Vice convener, Councillor Stewart MacDonald, said: “I am pleased that my amendment – that a report on the regeneration is given to the next housing and community services committee – was accepted.

“This substantial development, which will help to transform Twechar, has been overseen by the Twechar Regeneration Group.”

Councillor Jamieson said he was delighted his motion was approved and strengthened.

He added: “I have long had issues with the length of time this regeneration has taken, but hope the acceptance of my motion will speed up progress of this programme.”

Councillor Jamieson said he had expressed concern at the number of older infirm and disabled people who still live at the ‘Coal Board’ site and asked for them to be rehoused at the earliest opportunity.
