Should we charge for parking in and around Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs?
LOCALS are being asked their views on a controversial plan to bring in parking charges to help pay for the return of traffic wardens.
The council’s Decriminalised Parking Enforcement (DPE) scheme will see it employ its own army of traffic wardens, but a funding black hole means cash will have to be raised through parking charges.
Now council chiefs have embarked upon a consultation exercise and have organised a number of ‘drop-in’ events where residents can have their say and quiz council officers on the plans.
The first session will be on Wednesday, February 22, from noon-2pm and 6pm-8pm, in Lenzie Public Hall.
Council officers will then be in Bishopbriggs War Memorial Hall on Friday, February 24, and Kirkintilloch’s William Patrick Library on Friday, March 2 - both events also running from noon-2pm and 6pm-8pm.
Councillor Billy Hendry, convener of the council’s development and infrastructure committee, said: “While agreement has been reached in principle, I want to emphasise to people that no decisions have been taken on any charging regimes.
“The consultation will explain DPE to people and outline the processes involved for the council.
“It will also explain the different challenges across our area that arise from parking, the range of options available to help address these and give details of the decisions which need to be taken.
“We want to hear people’s views and get a feel for what they think should be done to improve their town centre experience.”

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 09:04 AMWhat a strange interpretation of the last paragraph! 'At the moment, in East Dunbartonshire, traffic warden duties have been taken over by police'. The reality is that Strathclyde Police have abandoned their traffic wardens and told the Council to fund their own, so until council tax payers fund the new DPE scheme, the only enforcement will be when the police can be bothered to write a ticket, but they'll be too busy fighting crime etc., won't they?
