Step towards the future? Supermarket plans lodged at last

THE future of Bishopbriggs town centre is the subject of two major planning applications from retail giant Morrisons.
The supermarket chain wants to build a new store, petrol station and car park, including long-stay spaces, on the former Bishopbriggs High School site.
The group has submitted two planning applications to East Dunbartonshire Council.
Outline permission was granted for a new store in 2009 – but these fresh plans provide the detail of how the retailer aims to proceed.
It’s the first of several phases of development expected to be taken forward by Morrisons, with additional proposals for a community hub and new housing.
The Herald recently revealed that Morrisons has also bought the Triangle Shopping Centre, in Bishopbriggs, from Derwent London.
This site includes its current store which it leased from Derwent.
Bosses say the purchase of the shopping centre will not affect current plans.
Stewart McNally, from the council’s planning department, talked about the applications at Bishopbriggs Community Council and Bishopbriggs Town Team meetings last week.
Residents were disappointed that no model had been created to help visualise the plans and were concerned that the community hub would be an office for the local authority – similar to the controversial ‘one-stop-shop’ created at William Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch.
A spokesperson for the Town Team group, which was set up last year to give the local community a voice on town centre regeneration, said: “The main thing is we have got to have time to analyse these plans and have reassurance that it will not be rushed to a planning board meeting.
“We hope that people will try and make an effort to go to the library and look at the plans in greater detail.”
Stewart McNally will be at Bishopbriggs Library to answer questions on the plans this Friday, September 28, and Thursday, October 4, from 1pm-4pm.
Residents have until Wednesday, October 10, to make comments on the planning applications.
