Sticking point for fed-up residents
A MOVE that could see the council cut back on the removal of chewing gum from East Dunbartonshire's streets has sparked concerns.
The decision was taken as East Dunbartonshire Council set its budget for 2010/11. The local authority has to make savings of more than 8million in the coming year.
But Donald Macdonald, chairman of Woodhill Residents' Group, believes the move will have a negative impact when it comes to civic pride.
He said: "Scaling back on the use of the chewing gum removal machines will have a visibly negative effect on areas very quickly."
Mr Macdonald, who is also a member of Bishopbriggs Community Council, added: "The machines were in action before Christmas in Bishopbriggs town centre. The place looked so much better afterwards."
A council spokesperson said: "Following the very recent budget approval and the subsequent allocations of monies, the waste management team are currently looking at the most effective and efficient delivery of all services, including chewing gum removal."
The council bought two gum machines last year at a cost of around 5,000.
