Still raising a racket after five decades!

EVERGREEN ladies are still supporting a badminton club that was started for stay-at-home mums almost 50 years ago.

Kirkintilloch Ladies Badminton Club was set up in 1965 by Doreen More and decades later women continue to turn up for their weekly game of doubles at St Mary’s Church hall.

“I originally turned up for the men’s badminton club, which is far more competitive and I felt out of my comfort zone, so I decided to start up my own,” explained Doreen.

She added: “Back then it was me and other mums, and we would have the kids in one corner while we took it in turns to play a game.

“Nowadays, however, most of the members’ kids are grown up.”

The ladies play doubles and use the game as a fun way to exercise.

They take a break in between games for tea and to give members the opportunity to catch up.

Doreen said: “This club is really about exercise and friendship. The halls are lovely and bright, and everyone loves coming here for a couple of games.

“We don’t take part in competitions, although from time to time some of the ladies will admit they get a little bit competitive.”

She added: “The faces at the club have changed over the years and we always welcome new ladies who want to come along”.

Players at the club are of all abilities and anyone who wants to play can do so regardless of their badminton experience.

The club runs from September to May in St Mary’s Church halls on Tuesdays from 1.30pm-3pm, taking breaks for holidays.

It costs £5 to join and there’s a weekly fee of £1.50.
