Strip Sir Fred of title say councillors

PRIME Minister Gordon Brown has been urged to strip former Royal Bank of Scotland boss Sir Fred Goodwin of his knighthood.

That's the plea from East Dunbartonshire councillors who unanimously voted last week to write to Prime Minister Gordon Brown demanding action be taken against Sir Fred.

Councillor Eric Gotts, who seconded the motion proposed by Councillor Duncan Cumming, said: "I think there is a mood in the country that something should be done, especially since Scotland seems to be bearing the brunt of the problems associated with banks."

He added: "There are a number of precedents for removing people's honours. People like Sir Fred Goodwin have caused ordinary families to lose a lot of money.

"These people just don't know what kind of future lies ahead for them."

A council spokesperson said: "As per the wording of the motion, the council's chief executive will write to the Prime Minister urging him to take the necessary steps to have the knighthood removed.

"He will also write to other Scottish councils urging them to pass similar motions. Finally he will write to local MPs asking them to sign the early day motion, currently tabled at Westminster, calling for the removal of the honour."

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson said: "I have signed the early day motion which calls for Sir Fred Goodwin's knighthood to be revoked, with an amendment noting that it was actually awarded on the recommendation of the Prime Minister in recognition of services to banking."
