Sturgeon backs Herald transplant crusade

A HERALD campaing to get readers to sign up to the Organ Donor Register has been backed by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.

Over recent weeks we’ve been meeting some of the people whose lives have been saved thanks to selfless organ donors.

All have urged residents to sign the register and, crucially, to let their families know about their decision.

Ms Sturgeon said: “I am delighted to support the Herald’s organ donation campaign.

“By joining the Organ Donor Register you could help to save a life.

“Signing up to the register only takes a couple of minutes, but could mean the difference between life and death for those waiting for a transplant.”

While over 90 per cent of people agree with organ donation, only 38 per cent of the Scottish population have made it official.

Every organ donor can save the lives of up to nine people on the event of their death.

This week we talk to mum Suzanne Hunter who suffers from a hereditary kidney disease which means she may need a transplant in later life.
