Super effort at ng5k!

NORTH Glasgow became a haven for superheroes as families flocked to a popular 5k run.

An amazing 2,900 fun runners took part in the fifth annual ng5k – the largest and best yet.

The event started out in 2006, with just under 1,000 participants, and has since TREBLED in size to become Glasgow's biggest community fun run.

It is also one of only a few events that continues to offer free entry to all.

To celebrate the fifth anniversary, this year's run – organised by North Glasgow Healthy Living Community – was based around the theme of superheroes.

Glasgow Warrior players D.T.H. Van Der Merwe and Fergus Thompson gave out spot prizes to best dressed participants.

Every ng5k fun runner received a medal, t-shirt, Tunnock's Caramel wafer, bottle of water, and piece of fruit at the finish line.

Participants could also visit the health tent before and after to enjoy a free sports massage or sample a fruit smoothie.

Participants could run, walk or jog along the 5K route (through Ruchill Park and surrounding roads) and there was a range of ages and abilities.

Hundreds also used the event to raise thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes.

Lyndsey Murison, health and wellbeing worker at North Glasgow HLC, said: "The response we've had from local people wanting to sign up this year was overwhelming and goes to show how popular the event has become.

"North Glasgow HLC firmly believe that people from all walks of life should have the opportunity to take part in affordable sporting activities, particularly younger children.

"It would cost nearly 60 for a family of four to enter the Great Scottish Run and junior events.

"Over the past five years, ng5k has encouraged thousands of local residents to get more active and learn about the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, as well as inspiring a whole new generation of runners.

"We hope that ng5k will still be going strong for another five years and, who knows, perhaps one of our youngsters will compete in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014."
