Support for post office petition
MORE than 600 people have backed a petition calling on Post Office chiefs to scrap plans to move the main Kirkintilloch branch into WH Smith in the town's Cowgate.
The petition was launched recently by East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson.
Ms Swinson has now passed the views of local residents on to Post Office officials in a bid to get them to halt the proposed closure of the Kerr Street office.
She said: "The high volume of petition responses I have received sends a clear signal. People are clearly very concerned about the impact of these plans on the Post Office service in Kirkintilloch. So far I have received over 600 responses to the petition, with more arriving every day.
"Every one of these responses expresses concern or opposition to the proposed relocation.
"Together, they make a compelling submission to the Post Office consultation and I hope they will force a re-think on this ill-founded proposal."
Some of the concerns raised by residents responding to the petition include WH Smith's Cowgate branch not being an ideal location or big enough for a post office.
People are also worried about potential problems with parking, disabled access and the existing post office being too busy for a move to go ahead.
