Swinson tours Low Moss
Governor Michael Stoney and MP Jo Swinson in the new HMP Low Moss.
EAST Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson toured the new HMP Low Moss last week ahead of its official opening.
The new Low Moss Prison is set to open on Monday, March 19, and prisoners will be phased in over a 10-week period in order to ensure a smooth transition to it being fully operational.
The new jail cost around £120million and will accommodate approximately 700 prisoners of various categories. More than 300 members of staff will be employed there.
She said: “The new prison is a massive improvement on the old Low Moss with its wooden huts, particularly in terms of the security measures in place.
“After the hard-fought campaign to keep the Low Moss name in the face of the ridiculous proposals from the Scottish Prison Service to rename it HMP Bishopbriggs, it was particularly good to see the HMP Low Moss signs on the front of the building.”
