Teachers come under attack in East Dunbartonshire
VIOLENCE against staff in schools has risen in the last year, according to new figures.
A report to East Dunbartonshire Council’s education committee showed 90 incidents of violence against education staff were reported between August 2011 and June 2012, compared with 88 the previous year.
Incidents of violence against staff were reported by 12 primaries, five secondaries and three special schools during 2011/12, with 14 pupils being temporarily excluded as a result.
The new figures show incidents in pre-school, primary and secondary schools had risen from one, 44 and 13 respectively in 2010/2011 to four, 60 and 19 in 2011/12.
However, the number of incidents in special schools/units has fallen from 30 in 2010/2011 to seven for 2011/12.
Violence against staff means any incident in which an employee is seriously abused, threatened or assaulted by a pupil, parent, member of the public or someone they meet through their employment.
Councillor Eric Gotts, the council’s convener of education, said: “From the period 2010/2011 to 2011/12 there has been an increase in the number of incidents recorded.
“This is due, largely, to more rigorous reporting mechanisms in place through our schools.
“We take all forms of violence seriously. By providing teachers with a robust reporting mechanism we are giving a strong message that we are working to counter this issue.
“Any type of violence is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated in any of East Dunbartonshire schools.”
