Thousands complete questionnaire on controversial East Dunbartonshire school merger plans

MORE than 7,000 people have had their say on controversial school merger plans in an ‘informal’ consultation.

East Dunbartonshire Council sent out 10,000 questionnaires to randomly-selected households earlier this year – after council officers outlined a shortlist of mergers to address crumbling primary school buildings and falling school rolls.

The surveys were also available online and at council offices.

Campaigners bidding to stop the mergers have welcomed the large number of responses and are confident they will demonstrate a united front.

Gordon Currie, the council’s head of education, said: “We are pleased that more than 7,000 questionnaires have been returned.

“They are currently with the market research company for analysis.

“A report on the results of the informal consultation will be presented to councillors at a meeting on March 27.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to be a part of the process.”
