Time to save clock at old Townhead Clinic...

editorial image

TIME has been found . . . to secure the future of a historic clock at a vandal-hit building.

The disused Townhead Clinic, in Lenzie Road, Kirkintilloch, has lain empty since a new state-of-the-art healthcare centre opened in nearby Saramago Street in 2009.

There are plans to turn the council-owned site into flats once the decrepit building is demolished.

However, the authority has agreed that the Co-op Jubilee clock – which used to have pride of place on the Lenzie Road side of the building – will be restored and reinstated on the side of the new flats when they are complete.

The council has also committed to spend more than £16,000 on recreation space at the Townhead site.

In November last year the Herald reported that vandals had been smashing unsecured windows and lighting multiple small fires in the grounds of the building.

Many residents were concerned that a full-scale blaze could spread to neighbouring buildings, including the Kirkintilloch Miners’ Welfare Club, which backs onto the former clinic.

Demolition work on the old premises is due to kick off next month.

There are plans to build 16 new flats, a pharmacy and “parking courtyard” on the site, but no firm timescale has been established.
