Time to take a stand on dog mess – zero tolerance, promises council

COMPLAINTS over pet owners who refuse to scoop the poop have rocketed at East Dunbartonshire Council – going up nearly 20 per cent.

Kirkintilloch’s Donaldson Street and Christine Way are the latest areas to be ‘named and shamed’.

The council is determined to reinforce the message that not cleaning up after your dog is disgusting and an offence.

So far this year the environmental and community protection team has received 273 complaints about dog fouling – up 51 on the previous year.

Similarly, the number of fixed penalty notices has risen from one to 10.

Failing to pick up immediately after a dog is an offence under the Dog Fouling (Scotland) Act 2003 and anyone caught will be issued with a £40 fine (rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days) by the council’s environmental wardens.

After last year’s campaign, any unpaid fixed penalty notices were reported to the Procurator Fiscal and offenders were issued with either a fine or fiscal warning.

Depute council leader Ashay Ghai said: “The pavements, streets, parks, fields and green spaces in East Dunbartonshire are for everyone to enjoy and dog owners should be respectful of this, and clean up after their dog or face the consequences.”

Dog bins are available throughout East Dunbartonshire and public litter bins can also be used to dispose of bagged dog waste.

Free bags are available from council buildings, community centres, police offices and some local supermarkets.
