Tragic teenager touched the lives of so many

A COMMUNITY is in mourning after the shock death of a 19-year-old while hillwalking.

Craig Cathie was with a group in the Flowerdale Estate area of Gairloch when he fell between 20 and 30 feet and injured his head.

The 19-year-old was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after the accident – which happened at around 4pm on Monday, January 23 – but died later in hospital.

As a talented and enthusiastic member of Stepps Hockey Club, Craig was involved in playing and umpiring on a regular basis.

Club president Gordon McCall said: “Craig touched the lives of so many people and you only need to read his Facebook page to see how much he meant to the people he knew.

“He was a much-loved character here at Stepps, displaying an abundant amount of enthusiasm, always with a smile on his face and giving 100 per cent effort,”

He added: “Many messages of condolence have been flooding into the club.

“Craig will be sadly missed and the thoughts of all current and former members of Stepps Hockey Club, and the wider Scottish hockey community, are with the Cathie family at this very sad time.”

Craig – from Moodiesburn – was formerly a pupil at Chryston High School, where he was a popular student.

Head teacher Linda Johnstone said: “Every member of the school community is so completely shocked at this tragic news.

“Craig was a lovely young man, with a bright and bubbly personality and a good sense of humour.

“He was very popular among his peers and with his teachers. It is an absolute tragedy he has been taken from us at such an early age. Our thoughts are with Craig’s family at this saddest of times.”

A minute’s silence is due to be observed at Stepps’ 3rd XI match on Saturday.
