Trapped in their homes by burning bin
KIRKINTILLOCH residents were left choking on acrid fumes after vandals set fire to a bin in a close.
The morons struck at Ivanhoe Drive, in Kirkintilloch, at around 3.50am on Sunday morning (September 5).
A full wheely-bin was pushed into the close and set on fire, triggering smoke alarms which alerted residents to the blaze.
Many householders were forced onto their balconies as any escape from the building was blocked by thick smoke.
Fire engines from Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs fire stations raced to the scene, put out the fire and used fans to disburse the acrid fumes.
A spokesperson for Kirkintilloch Fire said: "Thankfully nobody was hurt, but if it wasn't for the fact that residents had smoke alarms fitted it could have been much worse.
"We have now had a number of fires in this area and just hope that this isn't just the start of a spate of these blazes."
It is understood that police are now investigating the fire.
