AN £800,000 travelling person’s site which was ranscaked and destroyed by vandals has been cleared and left . . . for now.

Council chiefs are refusing to confirm when work will be carried out on the controversial development.

The Lennoxtown facility, in Primrose Way, originally opened in 2002 at a cost of £800,000, but was flattened after being burned down by vandals in 2009.

In April 2011 the council announced that the site would be renovated, with four pitches provided for travellers.

At that time Kenny Simpson, East Dunbartonshire Council’s head of housing and community services, said: “This rebuild will be undertaken during this financial year and it is anticipated that the site will become operational again in 2012.”

But more than five months after the end of that financial year, no construction work has been carried out.

One resident said: “They don’t seem to have a clue what they are doing. To be honest, nobody around here wanted the site in the first place, so we’re hoping they’ll never get around to it.

“Surely they could find a better use for the land.

“They could certainly spend the money in a more productive way - given how we’re always hearing they have to make cuts to this and that.”

Mr Simpson told the Herald last week: “Plans are currently underway for the rebuild of four pitches on the Redhills Travelling Persons’ site at Lennoxtown.

“We are currently awaiting warrants before the construction work can begin.”
