Vet warns of deadly rabbit disease
PET owners have been warned to be on the lookout for a disease which has killed several rabbits in recent weeks.
Lynn Martin, principal veterinary surgeon at Ballantine and Martin Veterinary Practice in Kirkintilloch, said there has been an outbreak of myxomatosis in the area.
The viral disease is carried and spread between rabbits by biting insects.
Lynn said: "The first signs of myxomatosis are usually puffy swellings around the head and face, and sore eyes.
"Pneumonia then often develops. Most rabbits unfortunately die from myxomatosis despite veterinary treatment.
"There is, however, a vaccine which should protect rabbits which is available from your veterinary surgeon.
"It can be given to healthy rabbits over six weeks of age. A booster vaccination is then given every six months."
