Wait a minute – five months of roadworks kick-off on one of Kirkintilloch’s busiest road

GAS works lasting for nearly FIVE MONTHS have started on Waterside Road ... and we want your views.

Angry motorists claim they were not told in advance about the major engineering project by Scotland Gas Networks (SGN).

The £176,000 gas mains upgrade kicked off today (Monday) and will last a patience-sapping 20 weeks.

The only clues in the run-up to the works were two small yellow signs at the side of Waterside Road, near the junction with Merkland Drive.

One motorist said: “This will be a nightmare. I wish they had warned us better in advance.”

Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) says it is “essential” to replace existing metallic gas mains and services with modern, plastic polyethylene pipe to ensure a “continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local area”.

Work was due to begin on Monday to upgrade almost 1.1km of pipe for an estimated 20 weeks – beginning at the junction of Merkland Drive/Waterside Road and progressing east to St Agatha’s Primary.

That means temporary two and three-way traffic lights for around five months.

The signals will operate for 24 hours each day and will be manually controlled between 7am-7pm each day in a bid to reduce traffic disruption.

Project manager Martyn Gray said: “We understand that people get frustrated by roadworks and would like to thank them for their patience. We will do everything we can to minimise disruption.”
