WALKERS will be able to get access to a road that is closed until October after a frustrated resident complained to the council.

Calfmuir Road is shut between Market Road and the railway bridge over the main Glasgow to Edinburgh line as part of the ongoing Woodilee housing development.

But one frustrated resident hit out at the closure to pedestrians. In a letter to a council officer he said: “I do not agree that pedestrians should not be allowed access.

“There is a newly completed footpath to the north of the bridge which could safely be used by pedestrians who have crossed the bridge from the south side.

“The footpath is still accessible which demonstrates that there is no reason for the bridge being closed to pedestrians. I would remind you that the local authority you represent promotes the ‘Walkers are Welcome’ policy.”

David Devine, head of roads at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “The works in the Calfmuir Road area are being carried out on behalf of the housing developer and not the council.

“However, in response to concern from people who walk in this area, the council has asked the developer to have his contractor establish an alternative route which will allow walkers to continue to use the footpath network whilst their works are being carried out.

“The footpath adjacent to the railway however will still require to remain closed until works are complete.”
