Warriors pitch up at Lenzie and help to find stars of the future

YOUNGSTERS at a rugby club had a training session to remember when a group of professionals put them through their paces.

Several members of the Glasgow Warriors squad visited Lenzie Rugby Club earlier this month - part of the team’s ‘Warrior’s Wednesday’ to get involved with the community and identify the Warriors of the future.

Lenzie will return the favour on Friday, November 2, when their under-18 team will take on Cartha Queens Park as a warm up to the Glasgow Warriors v Newport match at Scotstoun.

Meanwhile their p6 and p7 mini team will form a guard of honour before the game and play at half time.

Lenzie Rugby Club president Donald Brodie: “It went really well and it was good to see the professional clubs giving something back to grassroots rugby.

“The professional players stayed well over the hour they were due to attend. Over 70 kids aged 10-18 came along and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Thanks to Jim Taylor from Warriors, who organised it and thanks to the coaches for their hard work.”

Warriors player Ruaridh Jackson said: “Warriors Wednesday is a great way of interacting with a large number of clubs and schools across our region.

“We’re experiencing a period of real growth on and off the pitch at the Warriors, and getting into the community is key to sustaining that.

“A lot of the kids last night were talking about coming to watch us at Scotstoun, and hopefully we were able to convey what an exciting thing professional rugby is to be involved with.”
