We can’t hedge our bets when it comes to overgrown gardens!

OUT-of-control hedges and trees have been at the root of a number of disputes in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs, it has been revealed.

Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Fiona McLeod said the issue had caused neighbour disputes and concerns over damage to property.

Ms McLeod is supporting a Member’s Bill from North East MSP Mark McDonald to tackle the problem of high hedges.

She said: “When I was first an MSP in 1999, it quickly become clear that this is a serious problem that affects households from all parts of Strathkelvin and Bearsden.

“I believe this bill will give those affected the powers to finally have the problem addressed.

“Being the ‘leafy’ suburb that we are, trees and bushes are abundant and can grow out of control in a short period of time.

“I have had many neighbour disputes and dangerous trees which threaten residents and their homes, garages and vehicles in every town within my constituency.

“Absent or unknown landowners are often to blame and that’s where residents must be given the powers where they previously felt powerless.”

The bill now proceeds to Stage 1 of the Parliamentary bill process and will go to the relevant committee.
