POIGNANT tribute has been paid to the victims of Britain’s worst post-war mining disaster.
Hundreds of people took part in a service to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Auchengeich mining disaster on Sunday.
Forty seven men lost their lives during the 1959 Auchengeich Colliery disaster and six men also died at the pit in 1931.
The service was arranged by the Auchengeich Memorial Committee and included speeches by Elaine Smith MSP and North Lanarkshire Provost Tom Curley.
Wreaths were also laid by groups including Moodiesburn and District Miners and Glenmanor and St Michael’s primaries.
Memorial Committee secretary Willie Doolan said: “This is our way of showing we have not forgotten the men that lost their lives or their families. We will never forget them.”
A message of support and sympathy for the families of the four men who died during last week’s Welsh mining disaster was also read out.
