West Highland Way charity walk

A DEVOTED husband is preparing to walk the West Highland Way in memory of his late wife.

Stephen Weston and six other walkers will tackle the 95 mile route from Milngavie to Fort William later this year to raise money for Marie Curie's Big Build appeal.

Louise, Stephen's wife, died last year of cancer in Huntershill Hospice at the age of 33. The former Turnbull High School pupils had been married for just over two years when Louise died, although they had been together since they were 16.

Stephen said: "The target is to raise 2000, but we hope to beat that total.

"The hospice has done a great deal for our families. We wanted to do something in return to say thanks and also to raise some money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

"Although it will be difficult, we have been in training and will put in more work over the next few months.

"However, the reason we are doing the walk will keep us going to the end." Stephen (35) will be joined on the walk, between April 26 and May 3, by brother Davey and uncle Gerry, a member of Victoria Bowling Club in Torrance. The bowling club is also helping out with fundraising events.

Club member James Fraser, a former chairman of the Scottish Police Federation, said: "There are seven people lined up for the walk, including four members of the club, and we are already actively raising funds.

"Three of those who are doing the walk lost a family member to cancer last year, and they want to in some small way do something to repay Marie Curie for the wonderful care they give."
