VANDALS tore up grass and stole safety matting from a Kirkintilloch playpark.

Police are appealing for information to catch the callous crooks who targeted the facility in Taig Gardens, Waterside, overnight between Wednesday, August 1, and Thursday, August 2.

The new play area was built by Link Housing.

David Devine, head of roads and neighbourhood services at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “As part of their development in Taig Gardens, Link Housing have built a new play area to replace the old one.

“We have been working with them to ensure that the playpark is brought up to our standards and this includes the provision of adequate safety matting.

“It would seem that there has been a theft from the site and we will work with the police to assist them with their enquiries and with Link Housing to ensure the stolen safety matting is replaced, and to ensure that the new playpark is constructed to the highest possible standard.”

Link Housing says the damage to the playpark is minimal.

A spokesperson added: “The new housing development at Taig Road does include a new play area to replace one displaced by the new housing layout. Local residents were very much involved in the decision to replace the play area.

“Recently, some of the safety mats were disturbed. These will be re-instated by the sub-contractor, at a minimal cost, ensuring that these mats are pinned down to avoid recurrence.”

Anyone with information should call the police on 0141 532 4400.
