Why are new football pitches out of bounds?

THE controversial issue of access to school astroturf pitches has been raised again after the weekend weather put grass pitches out of bounds.

Lenzie Youth Club’s two Sunday games were cancelled as the grass grounds controlled by East Dunbartonshire Council were deemed unplayable.

However, the club has pointed out that “two excellent 3g astro pitches at both St Ninian’s and Kirkintilloch High School were lying unused”.

Club secretary and founder Ian Stevenson said the SFA is aiming to get more astro pitches built to combat the very wet weather.

Such pitches already exist in East Dunbartonshire, but can’t be used because agreement cannot be reached on weekend access, despite council assurances that the situation was being looked at.

He added: “Lenzie’s home pitch at Boghead has had two games played on the grass in the past four months, as the pitch is continually flooded, with the local teams having to rely on their opposition to produce playable pitches so games can be played.

“It is a very unsatisfactory situation. Thanks to their friends and rivals, Colts X1, Lenzie 15s did manage to get a fixture, but had to travel to Kilsyth to get the use of an astro pitch!”
