Wind power

A VILLAGE school is set to save hundreds of pounds each year on electrity by installing a wind turbine in the grounds.

The green power-source was unveiled at Craighead Primary in Milton of Campsie last week and immediately started providing it with clean, free electricity.

Local councillor Charles Kennedy said: "I'm very proud of the school's achievement.

"This is the first wind turbine in East Dunbartonshire, and hopefully the first of many.

"Over the course of a year they could save 800 in electricity bills. That's 800 that can be spent in the school, which should be an incentive for other schools to follow."

The turbine is the latest in a long series of eco-school projects undertaken by the school, which has won two eco flags since 2002.

Head teacher Fiona Leishman said: "We would now like to look at getting solar panels for the roof and are currently looking into the grants available."
