Youngster hopes skatepark petition is on track for success

A TALENTED youngster is riding high after his petition to create a skatepark received huge support from residents.

Lewis Spence (12), from Bishopbriggs, says there is nowhere for skaters and BMXers to practice safely in Bishopbriggs.

A petition launched by the determined youngster and his friends to get a skatepark built in Bishopbriggs has now received more than 100 signatures and has been backed by East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson.

Lewis, an S2 pupil at Turnbull High, said: “The petition is going brilliantly, it’s had a lot of support.

“There are not really enough facilities in Bishopbriggs for our age group so we thought we would try and get a skatepark built.

“There’s nowhere we can really practice at the moment and we need somewhere safe to go. We’ve been quite surprised by how many people have signed the petition.”

Jo Swinson MP, who recently held a meeting at Huntershill Village to gain support for skatepark facilities in Bishopbriggs, said: “Lewis and I chatted about the idea of a skatepark when I dropped in on the Bishopbriggs Youth BMX Club and he handed me his petition.

“He was really passionate about the idea and I gave him a few tips on the best people to contact to move things forward.

“The meeting we had on the back of this was such a positive event. There was a great buzz in the room and real drive to get the ball rolling.”
