A national lottery grant will ensure refurbishment work is carried out at the Caldwell Halls in Torrance.
Thanks to an Awards for All grant of nearly £10,000, work has already begun.
Caldwell Halls Trust secretary Steven Horsburgh said: ‘‘Caldwell Halls Trust committee were delighted with the grant of £9,850 which will be used to refurbish the upstairs hall of the Caldwell Halls in Torrance. This will enable us to reconfigure layout, improve storage, replace flooring and decorate to make a more spacious and comfortable community space.
‘The upper hall is smaller than the main hall and cheaper to hire so more suitable for meetings or gatherings with up to 20 people. This refurbishment is much needed as the upper hall has not been decorated in decades and will improve the space for existing groups such as Teen Scene.
‘The work will help to make the Caldwell Halls more marketable and new lets that are interested in accessing this space when complete in early 2015 include a yoga class. The halls have been in community ownership for the past four years and are managed by a committee of 10 volunteers all from the local community. Membership is open to all and we always welcome to new members.’’
Local MP Jo Swinson said: “The Caldwell Halls in Torrance are widely used by local people for group meetings, community events and also for my important constituency surgeries. Therefore, I am pleased to see that the £9,850 Awards for All grant will be spent on refurbishing the Caldwell Halls to make sure it can continue to provide for the community for years to come.”
