Move to make town
facilities accessible to those with dementia

Forty people with dementia took part in a “Walk Your Neighbourhood” event recently to assess Kirkintilloch as a dementia-friendly community.

East Dunbartonshire Council agreed to participate in the Scottish universities Insight Institute-funded
programme.

They were joined by
delegates from the Memory-Friendly Neighbourhoods Network.

The walkers rated public areas in Kirkintilloch, from signage and pedestrian access to disabled parking and age-friendly seating. The area’s Dementia Network and its partners are committed to delivering two dementia-friendly localities by 2014 and two by 2016.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell of the Council’s Social Work Committee, said: “Dementia friendly means improving opportunities for inclusion through awareness and dementia- sensitive environments.

“This will ensure people with dementia enjoy the same quality of life as other residents despite the challenges they experience.”
