MSP calls for an end to blacklisting in the construction industry

Elaine Smith MSP has signed a pledge opposing the use of blacklisting by a number of construction companies.

It was recently uncovered that a large number people in the construction industry have historically been excluded from employment due to being trade union members or whistle-blowers.

Ms Smith said: “No worker should be punished for speaking out for their rights and the rights of their workmates to enjoy decent working conditions.

“This is not only a discrimination issue, but a matter of human rights and the Scottish Government must stop awarding public contracts to companies involved in this appalling behaviour. These companies have destroyed the lives of many families and do not deserve to be rewarded for that with lucrative contracts.

“I have signed Unite’s pledge to put an end to blacklisting in the hope that others will follow suit.”
