MUM is definitely the word for a group of women who have decided to take strides towards greater fitness and friendship.
Emma Donaldson has started a non-profit-making ‘Mums on the Run’ group in Lenzie.
It is registered with Jog Scotland and specially designed to encourage mums to get into – or back into – running. The aim is to be mother-focused rather than child-focused, giving women the chance to get out, keep fit,
socialise and achieve goals.
Emma (34), a mother-of-one who lives in Lenzie, said: “I was looking to join a running group that met somewhere local, ideally at the weekend and was fairly social.
“I couldn’t find any group that fitted the bill so I thought I’d set up one. My original plan was to set up a beginner’s running group that met in Lenzie on a Saturday morning.
“As a first step to doing this, I attended a Jog Scotland leader’s course only to find out the following week that I was pregnant. The Mums on the Run group is the new, revised version of this plan!”
Emma started the group in July, setting up a low-cost, eight-week ‘get into/back into running course’ designed for complete beginners or those who had been fairly inactive for a while.
She said: “The course has been a success so far. The mums are on target to meet the course goal and we’ve had a number of child-free socials at Billington’s after our running sessions.”
There are currently nine mums on the course and Emma hopes to organise more programmes in the future.
She said: “We’re looking, depending on demand, to run further courses, including a course with the end goal of running a 5K. For those mums that already run and would like to meet other mums that do so (e.g. for runs, socialising etc.), we’d love them to get in touch too.”
