HERO residents leapt into action to save their homes after vandals set fire to caravans in Kirkintilloch.

The two caravans at the centre of the drama were parked in the communal car park at the back of Alloway Drive, in Harestanes, Kirkintilloch.

The alarm was raised last Wednesday (January 11) just before midnight after – it is believed – they were deliberately torched by vandals.

Residents called Strathclyde Fire and Rescue for help and 10 firefighters rushed to the scene.

One woman said: “I ran downstairs and said to my friend, whose car was parked next to one of the caravans, that he better move it.

“I called the fire brigade while another friend entered the caravan and used cushions to put the fire out.”

The resident then contacted the owner of the other caravan, who used a water hose to extinguish the blaze.

“I was shocked when I saw the fire, but we managed to put it out.”
