SPORTY teams from across East Dunbartonshire have taken part in a special presentation to mark the end of the netball season.

Bishopbriggs Academy scooped the title in the S1/2 East Dunbartonshire Netball League for the sixth year running, with Boclair Academy taking second place.

In the S3/4 league Douglas Academy took the top spot and Bishopbriggs Academy were runners-up.

The league, which runs from August to March, began in 2006 and aims to get girls involved in sport.

Over 150 pupils from seven schools in East Dunbartonshire, including Lenzie Academy, Turnbull High and St Ninian’s High now take part in the league.

Winners were presented with their trophy and medals at a presentation event held in the Leisuredrome, in Bishopbriggs.

Lyndsay Atkinson, the PE teacher at Bishopbriggs Academy who set up the league, said: “In 2005 there was no netball happening in East Dunbartonshire and, although girls were coming to practise, there were no fixtures or competitions for them to take part in.

“We’ve now got girls competing regularly and participating in netball weekly from August to March.

“It’s all about getting girls involved in sport and the league has made a big difference.”
