New community centre plans taking shape

EXCITING plans to build a new community centre in one of the district’s most deprived areas are moving forward.

The existing Hillhead Community Centre is more than 80-years-old and local people have long campaigned for a replacement.

The new £2.5 facility will replace the current building, in Meiklehill Road, Hillhead, which dates back to the Second World War.

The centre is used by many groups and includes a cafe and creche.

A consultation with the local community was carried out in November last year when they were asked to say what they want to use the building for, what facilities it needs and which groups will need to be catered for both now and in the future.

Feedback said that the top three requested facilities for the new centre were a cafe, a learning space (with computers and wireless internet) and a hall for sports and activities.

A feasibility report assessing the cost, risk and potential for the new centre has now been submitted.
