EXCITEMENT is building ahead of the first term starting next week at the new Kirkintilloch High.
Acting head teacher Eddie Muir, along with pupils and staff, is eagerly looking forward to moving into the state-of-the-art building in the new term.
Construction staff are currently putting the finishing touches to the multi-million pound facility - one of six Public/Private Partnership (PPP) schools being built across East Dunbartonshire.
Mr Muir told the Herald that anticipation of the doors finally being opened on the new campus, coupled with an exceptional follow-up report from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIe), has lifted the entire school community.
He said: "The school has really been caught up in our fantastic HMIe report and now we have a fantastic new building.
"Our attainment is improving, the ethos is improving and towards the end of last term, when the pupils saw everything being packed up for the move, you could feel this wonderful sense of anticipation.
"We have been working beside a building site for the last couple of years, but it wasn't until the classrooms in the current building were being cleared that it actually felt like the big move was happening for real.
"I take my hat off to the construction company who have been absolutely tremendous. Everything has been relatively painless, meaning everyone has been so positive about the move.
"We have all worked hard to drive the school forward, but the new building really is the icing on the cake."
Mr Muir said preparations are already well underway for the first day of the new term, when pupils and staff will be familiarising themselves with their plush new surroundings.
He said: "Most staff have toured the new school at least once, but there is still a lack of familiarity which might be a problem when we bring the pupils in.
"So we are going to stagger the intake of pupils on their first day back to avoid having 600 pupils descending on the school and asking where to go.
"Our new S1s will be the first group of pupils to have their entire secondary school career in this new building, which is something very special."
Mr Muir added: "We also have an added bonus in that a team of our pupils won a competition to design the new eating experience for all the PPP schools.
"They have worked so hard alongside the council to get that ready. There is a real sense of pride that their designs will be used across East Dunbartonshire."
