CONCERNED East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson has called on newspapers caught up in the phone hacking scandal to be called to account.

She made the demand after speaking out in the House of Commons, shortly before Rupert Murdoch’s News International announced it would not be seeking to complete its takeover of BSkyB.

Ms Swinson has backed a full enquiry into allegations and the ethics of the British press.

She said: “This is a victory for the British public.

“As I have stated to the Prime Minister, sanctions must be imposed on any media outlet who acts in such an irresponsible way.

“Those who have broken the law must be brought to justice.”
