Police are treating a blaze at a cultural centre in Bishopbriggs early this morning (Tuesday, November 17) as suspicious.

A member of the public raised the alarm after spotting smoke coming from the building at Auchinairn Road around 2.20am.

Firefighters put out the blaze and the area was cordoned off for a number of hours while police investigated.

No one was injured and officers are inspecting CCTV footage, and appealing for witnesses.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday morning: “No persons were within and the fire was extinguished with some damage to the building.

“A full joint Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service investigation is underway into the cause and circumstances of the fire.

“It is too early at this stage to provide any further details but it is being treated as suspicious.”

Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at Bishopbriggs Cultural Centre around this time or has information regarding this incident please call police on 101.

Police Scotland said earlier this week it had investigated instances of crime motivated by religious hatred since the events in Paris on Friday.

The force said the crimes have been committed both online and in public and that arrests have been made in connection with the offences.

Police Scotland said that the force “will not tolerate any form of ‘Hate Crime’ and urged everyone across the country to “continue working together to ensure that no one feels threatened or marginalised.”
