St Barbara’s Muirhead parish priest Kenny Campbell has just helped raise much needed funds for Mary’s Meals after completing The Big Belter cycle ride.

He took part in the Cycling Scotland challenge which saw him cycle over 110 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh passing through the Scottish Borders and raising over £2,300 for the charity.

The popular local priest was a familiar sight around the streets of Muirhead as he trained for the race over the past six months, cycled at least three times weekly with each session covering at least 25 miles. At weekends he covering between 60 and 80 miles.

Not one to give himself an easy challenge, Fr Kenny ensured that each training session took in the difficult climbs around Carmichael.

The challenge was also a way to help him mark his 50th birthday.

He said: “Turning 50 is a big thing. I thought it would be good to set myself a challenge as well as do something positive for charity. I had great fun and would do it again.”

Pedal for Scotland was organised by Cycling Scotland and is the country’s biggest bike event. This year’s challenge saw 550 take part.
