A councillor has renewed calls for a new bus service to enable people to access shops, health care, libraries, community centres and the Allander Leisure Centre.
Duncan Cumming, an Independent councillor for Bearsden North, would like a loop bus service in Milngavie and Bearsden which could also provide a link to services at the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the south side of the city.
He says it would be particularly useful for residents in the Mosshead area of Bearsden as they currently don’t have access to a timetabled bus service of any kind.
Councillor Cumming says he will spend “a significant amount of effort and time” convincing the council, SPT and the bus companies to try a pilot scheme, and that he will not be giving up.
He said: “The idea of such a bus makes absolute sense, and I can assure all my constituents, that for as long as I’m a Councillor in Bearsden, I will continue to campaign for this.
“I believe that it could potentially revolutionise so many people’s lives, by improving access to a wide variety of services and facilities.
“Over the last few months I have been overwhelmed by the number of constituents who are right behind my campaign.
“I think this enthusiasm for my campaign is encapsulated by the constituent who wrote to me a few weeks ago and said “I love the idea of a loop/commuter bus. It would be fantastic to be able to get to the station or other places locally without taking the car.”
“All stakeholders should work together to achieve the same objective of delivering this innovative scheme.”
The council’s convener of development and regeneration, Councillor Alan Moir, said: “Council officers have engaged with SPT and commercial bus operators regarding the potential for the introduction of a loop bus in the Bearsden and Milngavie area.
“However, SPT is not in a position to support such a service as the majority of residents are within an acceptable walking distance of an existing bus service while commercial operators have questioned the commercial viability of such a service operating over such a restricted area.
“We will continue to work with the SPT Operations Committee to try and find a solution.”
