PLANNING chiefs have approved a major face-lift for a historic bridge.

Eastside Bridge, which spans the River Luggie in Kirkintilloch, was originally built in 1715.

In recent years it has become a peeling eyesore, but last week East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board agreed to restore the bridge to its former glory.

Temporary barriers will be removed, footpaths strengthened, holes repaired and paintwork freshened up. Meanwhile, lamp standards, which are the only surviving example of the town’s first foundry, will be removed, refurbished and replaced using the original masonry.
