There have been reports of an accident this morning at the controversial ‘shared space’ area in Kirkintilloch town centre.

Eyewitnesses told the Herald two vans were in collision at Kerr Street’s junction with Cowgate around 11.45am today, Thursday, October 20.

One onlooker said she believed the collision happened as one of the vans stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross.

Trader Jacqui Fairbairn of Gemini Cards on Cowgate was one of the eyewitnesses.

She said: “I don’t believe anyone was hurt. I saw both drivers get out of their vehicles and exchange details.”

Thousands of people are up in arms over the new road design at Cowgate, particularly the removal of the traffic lights at the busy Kerr St/Catherine St junction. Many have told the Herald they fear it is only a matter of time before a serious accident happens there.
