DOZY dog owners who refused to pick up their pet’s poo have picked up something else – a fine!

Environmental wardens and police have been clamping down on the barking locals who refuse to clean up after their pets.

In the run-up to Christmas, two fixed penalty notices were issued for offences in Victoria Street and Hillhead Road in Kirkintilloch.

Meanwhile, in Bishopbriggs, an offending dog owner was reported to the Procurator Fiscal by the local police.

Hotspots identified by the council, which launched a crackdown in the summer, include:

* The canal path at Kirkintilloch Marina, which is used by pupils going to and from school

* Victoria Street behind the banks in Kirkintilloch

Failing to pick up immediately after a dog is an offence under the Dog Fouling (Scotland) Act 2003. Those caught will be issued with a £40 Fixed Penalty Notice (increasing to £60 if not paid within 28 days) by the council’s environmental wardens.

Depute leader of the council and convener of housing and community services, Ashay Ghai, said: “It is encouraging to see that those responsible for dog mess are prosecuted when caught and I hope that this is warning to those who disregard their neighbours and community by failing to pick up after their pets.”
