AMBITIOUS plans for a new supermarket, restaurant and business units on a former bus depot site have taken a step forward.

Supermarket chain Lidl has been confirmed as one of the companies for the development in Milton Road, Kirkintilloch.

The group has planning permission for the project and has now submitted further details related to the application.

It was originally thought KFC would be part of the development, but the fast food outlet withdrew its interest earlier this year.

The ambitious proposals to transform the derelict site also include premises for business, general industrial, and storage/distribution units.

A legal agreement was recently concluded for the development which will secure a £191,500 contribution from the developers for improvements in the area.

This includes improving pedestrian links from the site to the town centre and improvements to the A803 corridor.

There will also be money for public/civic space projects, delivered by the council, and cash towards upgrading the traffic lights at the junction of Milton Road and Glasgow Road.
