A BENEFITS cheat from Kirkintilloch has been sentenced to eight months in prison after a lengthy probe.

Brian Redmond (47), from Ellisland, Kirkintilloch, was sentenced after pleading guilty to two charges of benefit fraud at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week.

It was the culmination of a 10-month investigation by East Dunbartonshire Council’s fraud team, who discovered Redmond had falsely claimed £8,934.47 of housing benefit from the council and £27,049.30 of income support from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

Ian Black, head of finance at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “While custodial sentences like this are rare, the severity of this fraud and the amount of money involved left the court with little choice.

“Redmond made a clear and determined choice to break the law thinking he could get away with it, but benefit fraud is a serious crime and as this case shows, there is no escaping justice.”
