ONE of Scotland’s worst mining disasters was remembered on Sunday as tribute was paid in Moodiesburn.

More than 400 former miners, children, families, church leaders and politicians gathered to commemorate the Auchengeich mining disaster, which claimed the lives of 47 men on September 18, 1959.

Willie Doolan, secretary of the Auchengeich Colliery Memorial Committee, said: “Despite the weather, between 400 and 500 people turned up.

“It’s still emotional even after all these years. The scars are still there and will never fade.

“This was the first service that the late Councillor Charles Kennedy has missed and Tom Clarke MP paid tribute to him.”
